The release of Cambridge Annual Review of Applied Linguistics edited by professor Hu Zhuanglin was held in the Commerical Press

On Feburary 24th, 2017, the release of Cambridge Annual Review of Applied Linguistics and the seminar Translations of Classics of Linguistics was held in the Commercial Press. The book series edited by Professor Hu Zhuanglin, School of Foreign Languages of Peking University, is the first published introduction to linguistics translated from English, fifteen books still to come in the first batch (2000-2014).

Xiao Qiming, secretary of the Party Committee of the Commercial Press, as well as more than 20 experts and scholars from Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Wuhan University, Fudan University and other universities and research institutions attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Ms. Ma Haolan, Director of the English Editorial Office of the Commercial Press.

In his speech, Xiao Qiming said that the Commercial Press has always paid attention to and supported the academic research of linguistics, and pointed out the significance and value of the series of Chinese translations of linguistic works. He also claimed that the press would keep promoting the development of such series, and further expand the academic influence the series at home and abroad, making greater contributions to academic communication. He then presented the "Honorary Consultant" letter of appointment to Professor Hu Zhuanglin on behalf of the Commercial Press, and thanked Professor Hu for his help and support for the work of the Commercial Press throughout the years.

In his speech, Prof. Hu Zhuanglin looked back on his own process of selecting and reviewing the author and the essay as editor-in-chief, acknowledged the contributions of the expert team to the high academic standards of the series, and expressed his gratitude to the Commercial Press. In his address, Professor Hu Zhuanglin recalled reminiscently the connections of his family and the Commercial Press, as well as the close cooperation between the Commercial Press and Peking University. Previously, when Professor Hu was informed that the Commercial Press was founded for 120 years, he donated to the Commercial Press his family treasure, the Republic of China version of Ciyuan (a set of three copies) published by the Commercial Press and a Primary School Library original bookcase.

The experts and scholars discussed issues centering on the selecting of “the translation of linguistic classics,” such as the balance between the classic and the frontier, the translator's ability assessment, the cross-branch and cross-language and the needs of readers at all levels.

It is reported that the Cambridge Annual Review of Applied Linguistic series of books, published by the Cambridge University Press, is a top international journal in the application of linguistics, focusing on one linguistic theme each year. The series of books summarize the topics and contents of the different stages of applied linguistics, including "linguistics as a new discipline, language and psychology, language contact and evolution, language and technology, language policy and language assessment, multilingual study" and other topics. The Commercial Press imported the series, invited Professor Hu Zhuanglin as editor in chief and relevant top experts to write reading guidance for each journal, which offers critical insight of relevant topics, providing guidance and help for readers to read, study, research. Its theory and method have great significance for domestic mother tongue teaching and foreign language teaching.
