The release ceremony of the Chinese translation of You Are the Water Surface of One Thousand Eyes (The Poetry Collection of Mistral) translated by Zhao Zhenjiang held in the Embassy of Chile in China

On February 23rd, 2017, The Embassy of Chile in China held the release ceremony of the Chinese translation of You Are the Water Surface of One Thousand Eyes (The Poetry Collection of Mistral) translated by Zhao Zhenjiang, professor of the School of Foreign Languages of Peking University. Attending the ceremony were the diplomats from Latin-America countries, guests from the publication business, and experts in the field of Spanish Literature. The ceremony was held by Edmundo, the cultural counselor of the Embassy of Chile in China.

George, the ambassador of Chile, elaborately introduced the life and work of the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral in his address. He gave high praise to Professor Zhao Zhenjiang for his expertise in literature and literary translation and appreciated the publishing house for its excellent compiling work.

Wei Ran, who obtained his doctoral degree in literature in Peking University and later became an associate researcher in the institute of Latin-America, gave a detailed introduction on the translation works Professor Zhao Zhenjiang has done as well as on the present translation of Latin-American literature in China. He remarked that the publication of You Are the Water Surface of One Thousand Eyes is constructing a channel for the communication between China and Chile. He also suggested that the Chinese readers should read more Latin-American literature to broaden their horizons and get enlightened. At the end the of ceremony, the translator of the book, renowned Spanish-Chinese literary translator, Professor Zhao Zhenjiang, introduced the contents of You Are the Water Surface of One Thousand Eyes (The Poetry Collection of Mistral). The book includes all the important representative poems of Mistral, from Despair, Tender, Tara, Squeezer of Grapes and Poetry about Chile. It also includes her thirteen proses, the awarding words from the Nobel Prize Committee, her speeches and bibliography. Professor Zhao Zhenjiang revised the former edition and added nearly a thousand new lines of translation. He also introduced the dissemination of Mistral’s poems in China. He acclaimed both the poet’s talent and personality and referred to the difficulties he had overcome during the translation. His simple but humorous speech is warmly responded by the attending guests.

Gabriela Mistral is the first Latin-American Nobel laureate as well as the only Spanish woman writer who has won such honor. She is known as the “The Queen of Lyrics”. In the February 21st, 2017, Professor Zhao Zhenjiang won the “Century New Poem – A Lifetime Achievement Award” awarded by the academic committee of the Chinese Spring Gala of Poetry.
