OUTREACH TO OTHER CHINESE UNIVERSITIES
As Peking University takes the lead among all Chinese Universities in understanding and facilitating the use of theatre and theatre-related studies to develop a more fully-rounded, creatively stimulating liberal arts education for its students, other Chinese Universities have followed suit. As a result of interest from other Mainland schools in incorporating theatre and theatre-related studies into their curriculums, Joseph Graves (under the auspices of Peking University’s School of Foreign Languages and its Institute of World Theatre and Film) has taught workshops, directed plays and given lectures in theatre and theatre-related studies at more than 60 different Mainland Universities to both undergraduate and graduate students as well as to professors and teachers at those Chinese universities.
NATIONAL CHINESE UNIVERSTIES SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
In cooperation with Dr. David Parker, of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Mr. Graves and the Institute helped to establish, and continues to help facilitate, The National Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival, now entering its 7th year. To date dozens of Universities from the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, have participated in the Festival. The Festival culminates each year with 12 Chinese Universities given all expenses paid trips to Hong Kong for an 8 days festival in which each invited university performs an abbreviated version of one of Shakespeare’s plays for Hong Kong audiences. The team from the university selected as having achieved the most outstanding performance at the festival is given a 10 day, all expenses paid trip to London and Stratford, where students interact with actors and directors from the RSC, as well as see a number of plays, and visit many historical sites of Shakespearean import.
