谢侃侃的科研及教学关注广义“马来群岛”地区（或称Nusantara，涵盖印度尼西亚、马来西亚、新加坡等）的历史及当代问题，学术兴趣包括但不限于左翼运动、殖民主义、民族主义及去殖民化、族群与身份政治、农村发展与治理、冷战中的中国与东南亚关系等。他长期在东南亚、西欧、北美等地搜集档案或开展实地调研，运用英语、印尼语、马来语、荷兰语进行文本或民族志研究。
